Teams served in their groups for the morning. The Children's team had a blast helping with the school carnival! The team at Sunshine was hard at work planting grass seed for a new park area and planted flowers along the curbside of the Greenline coffee shop. The Living Hope crew continued organizing the thrift store (it looks fantastic!), working on the apartment, and helped Living Hope spread the word to the community about their VBS program starting next week.

We toured Pacific Garden Mission, one of the largest homeless shelters in the U.S. where we got to learn about their mission and heart for sharing the Gospel and caring for the homeless community. We were then blessed by a message shared with us by CW, the youth pastor for Sunshine. He led an engaging and thoughtful discussion on Ferguson and the issues leading up to that event. CW shared how sin, gentrification, and broken politics all have contributed to the issues we are seeing in the media today providing our students with a new perspective. God is growing and stretching our team in compassion and understanding as well as challenging us with what our own response is as Christians.

We then had a late night treat of Harold's chicken...a must when you're in Woodlawn!

Pray for us today as we will be finishing in our service teams! We will then head for some fun at the lake and beach. Tonight we will have our final debrief and I am praying and believing God to move in powerful ways in our team tonight. Please continue to cover us in prayer. If you would, I would greatly appreciate prayer as I travel and transition to leading our juniors in Guatemala.
All for Him,

One thing that I took away from today is that Jared was talking about different ways people enter poverty and I always assumed that poor people on the streets were poor because of buying drugs or stuff like that. I realized that there are tons of ways people could end up on the streets and all kinds of people can wind up on the streets -Jacob B

Something that really stood out to me this week was our trip along the “El” talking to strangers. I began speaking to a man who just sat down near me, and next thing I knew, we were talking about local sports and how he didn’t like Chicago teams. He seemed like a great guy and I really enjoyed talking to him. Then he asked where I, along with a couple other Wooddale kids, were from, so we told him. His eyes lit up, and he just seemed super excited about what we were doing. He told us that he was a Christian himself and felt completely redeemed. He told us his testimony after that. He said that he grew up on the South side, when during that time, fighting was what gave you a name. It wasn’t about the violence, but instead, it was just about honor. Therefore, it was no surprise that he got in a fight with a man in a restaurant and tragically, the man died as a result. He was sentenced to 8 years in jail. He had to leave his daughter and wife to go to jail, one of the hardest things he did. Two years in jail, though, a pastor came and preached the Gospel to him. From that point on, he was much happier and studied the word of God religiously. After he told us his story, we were in awe and he gave us many nuggets of wisdom that will change my view on life forever. -Dillon Z

This week I have been given the chance to serve on the Sunshine service team. We have been gardening in front of the Greenline coffee shop that Sunshine runs. We are also working on cleaning out an empty lot to plant grass in order to make a park for the children to come play in. It has been a great experience to serve the people of the Woodlawn neighborhood in this way. It is always fun to talk to the locals that stop by and to see their faces light up when we tell them what we’re doing. Thank you to everyone for all of your prayers throughout this week! -Claire L

The meal share was a really cool experience for me. Even though my group got turned downed seven times, it was still cool to approach the people. We asked a lot of people if they wanted to share a meal with us but they all said that they were too busy trying to make money. However, they did want the meal so we gave it to them and some of the people only wanted the water. So although we got turned down to have conversations, we were still able to pray with them and for them before we went on our way and that was a special experience. -Maddy B

Chicago has been an absolute blast so far! I have been working on the children’s team, and working primarily with a 1st grade class. My partner, Katie S and I have been blessed with an amazing teacher. My kids have shared with me some stories of their home life, including how they have lost loved ones to violence. Even with this, they still are so joyful and genuinely happy almost all of the time. I have had many opportunities to tell these kids about the church that we are staying at and also the love of Jesus. The kids are such a blessing to be around and I can’t wait to see them again tomorrow -Joe M

This week I have been working with kids at the local school. I was put into a 3rd grade class and I had the privilege to work with these kids and share their daily experience with them. The problems that the school and its students face hits me hard every time I walk into it. I have more of an understanding on how Jesus loves us, because of these beautiful kids. It breaks my heart to see these kids with such dreams about going to college and getting an education and knowing they are already at a disadvantage. God has shown me to love them and love the people in this community just as he loves us the broken and helpless. These kids and this experience has grown me in my Christian faith and its something I couldn’t get anywhere else – Abbey M

Last night I heard Joel talk about Chicago’s history and the reasons for the racial and economic differences in the neighborhoods. I learned a lot more about Woodlawn and how it came to be this way. It made me aware that there are still very big struggles that we choose to ignore or just don’t know much about because it’s not our experience. Since it’s not our experience and we have no ties to these people we don’t commonly involve ourselves in their struggles. But that’s what we should be doing…recognizing when others are in need of help and love and coming to their sides. We are in need of loving God’s people more and I hope that’s something some of us can try and change. -Alyssa LWooddale Senior High Urban Triphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12005873838639213286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595743798083493527.post-73031070476059025592015-06-17T23:10:00.000-07:002015-06-17T23:10:32.399-07:00WednesdayToday's highlights include Stratified Monopoly, serving in our work groups, another great message from Joel, and thoughtful discussion.

The Living Hope group did an amazing job working on the interior of an apartment that a couple will soon move into! They hung cabinets, tiled the bathroom, and other various tasks all with a servant's heart. The Children's team continued serving in the classrooms. They have immersed themselves into the culture of the school and have touched and been touched by the people in the community. The Sunshine group continued working on the community garden projects. This team is not afraid of hard work and their efforts will have a visible impact in Woodlawn!

Stratified Monopoly simulated economic realities in the U.S which demonstrated some of the financial barriers that continue the poverty cycle. This sparked interesting discussion and provided us with a new view on economic contributors that perpetuate the poverty cycle that we may have not considered before.
Joel again blessed us with his teaching. Tonight, he shared the history that has shaped the economic and racial realities of neighborhoods in the city and suburbs of Chicago. This background enriched our understanding of Woodlawn and challenged us to ask ourselves, what is our response as Christians to injustice.

More tomorrow....keep praying. We feel your prayers. Praise God for what He is doing!
Today students continued serving in their work groups at the school, at Living Hope Church, and at Sunshine. In the afternoon, students had the opportunity to share a meal with someone from the homeless community in the financial district of Chicago. Be sure to ask them about this...it was so encouraging to hear them share about how they stepped out in faith to share a meal with someone and hear their story. God is at work in and through our students!

Tonight, Jared shared a message on the question "Why are people poor?" He shared three reasons why a person may fall into or stay in poverty: tragedy, personal sin, and injustice and oppression. He then shared more about the reason the Bible speaks about the most...oppression and injustice. Jared's message challenged and encouraged our students to dig more into understanding God's heart for the poor, what this looks like on the south side, what this looks like at home, and what our response is as Christians to oppression and injustice.

Below are some reflections from our students on their experiences so far.

We are so thankful to be a part of what God is doing on the south side. Keep praying for us.
This trip has been amazing and has opened my eyes to see more about diversity and racism. It’s only been a few days and I am already wishing that this trip would be longer. I have grown in my faith and have become close to the kids that I am working with at the school. They make me smile and laugh when I spend time with them and they have been amazing to work with. My highlight of this trip was definitely riding the “El” train because I made an amazing friend named Bernard. He taught me so much about life, Jesus, and our society, and I can’t wait to see him again in heaven someday.(Charlie S)

One event on this mission trip that really impacted me was the meal share. We talked to a girl named Eliza, she was 16 years old (our age) and desperately wanted to go to school and get a job. This really put things into perspective because I sometimes don’t want to go to school which I now realize was quite selfish. We had already given all of our money and lunches to other homeless people that wanted nothing but that. We were feeling pretty discouraged that we hadn’t had any conversations with people. That’s when we saw Eliza. We had nothing to greet her with but a dollar and she received us with open arms. She sat with us and told us all about her amazing story. The only thing in her life constant enough for her to hold onto was God. This was so encouraging for my faith knowing how much she had been through and how strong she was in it. I will always remember Eliza and her story for my whole life and I am so blessed for the opportunity to hear it. (Laura H)
We have been to serve on the children’s team and we can see the impact not only in their lives, but ours too. Earlier today, there was an award ceremony for the elementary kids that had awards to receive such as perfect attendance, most improved, citizenship, and A and B honor rolls. We were surprised to see a young boy in our first grade class lagging behind with tears in his eyes, arms crossed, and a scowl on his face. At first he pushed us away telling us he didn’t want to talk. We told him we were always there if he wanted to tell us why he was sad. Minutes later he tapped our shoulder saying in a soft ashamed voice “I’m ready to talk about it now.” We immediately got on our knees to comfort him. He proceeded to tell us he had not gotten any awards at the ceremony and felt stupid, as a lot of his classmates were boastfully waving their awards in their air. We told him it shouldn’t affect how he felt about himself and how he should use it as motivation to work extra hard next year to receive one. We hugged him and he kept thanking us for the encouragement. We got back in the room and decided to quickly scribble out an “award” as an attempt to try and cheer him up. We wrote something like “best effort in the class – we will never forget you and you mean so much to us.” When we gave to him, he stared at it for a bit and then we asked if he wanted us to read it to him. As we read it, his eyes brightened up and he began to have tears again, but telling us “they are happy tears!” and hugged us again with a big smile. We had no idea that this little piece of paper would have such an impact on this kid and how easy it was for us to do something small for him, but it made a big difference. It taught us that we don’t have to do something big to make someone’s day better. (Jackie B and Lauren W)

One thing that I took away from today is that after the meal share, I realized that that there are tons of ways people could end up in poverty and my perspective on the poor has changed (Jacob B)

Working in the elementary school on the children's team has given me a new perspective and has changed my entire outlook on my life. I have come to the realization that I am blessed beyond belief. I have come to absolutely love the girls in my class, and I hope they feel the same way. I can’t wait to hang out with these kids for 3 more days and to see what Jesus is going to do in my life and theirs!!” (Sarah D)

This morning we began serving in our work teams. Our work teams will serve together every morning this week. There are three groups this year! One group is serving at one of the local elementary schools and assisting teachers in the classroom. Our students in this group are absolutely loving interacting with the elementary school students.

The second group is serving Living Hope Church by organizing the donations to the thrift store as well as preparing an apartment to be ready for a couple to move in.

The third group is serving with Sunshine Gospel Ministries and will be working on community garden areas as well as clean up of the Sunshine properties and lots!

The groups are listed below so you can be praying for them!

After work groups, we left Sunshine and headed over to ride the "El" train from the South Side to the North Side and back. Students were challenged to engage people riding on the train in conversations, to listen to the stories of others, and to observe. Your kids were incredible. It was such a joy to see them engaging and connecting with people on the train.
Tonight, we enjoyed a time of worship and were again blessed by Joel and his teaching.

It was a wonderful day.

We started the day by attending the 8am worship service at Christ Bible Church. Pastor Ford delivered a powerful message that highlighted God's design for family and challenged our students to be obedient to what God's Word says about family and marriage. We were blessed by the beautiful worship music and Pastor Ford's passion behind his preaching!

We then began our site seeing and enjoyed visiting The Bean and other sites at Millennium Park.

Afterwards we enjoyed lunch at Navy Pier...
And then headed to the Skydeck at Willis Tower! We were blessed with an incredible view of the city and students enjoyed a devo time by the Southside windows.
Then we went back to Sunshine where Joel gave an orientation about Sunshine Gospel Ministries and safety. Joel then began what I know will be a powerful, challenging, and exciting dialogue about God's heart for the poor and his heart for us.

We are now at the church where we will be staying for the rest of the nights. Students learned which work groups they will be in and will begin serving in those groups tomorrow morning! We had lights out at 11 and they are all fast asleep.

Thank you so much for your prayers! You can also support us by writing notes in the comments section on the blog! Your note can be specific to your student (which we will read out loud...it's so fun!) or a note to the entire team.

Keep praying for us!

Love from the 2015 Chicago Team!

We have had a fantastic start to our week. After our send off this morning, we made great time and had lunch at McDonalds in Tomah, WI. We arrived in Chicago with just enough time to spare to enjoy the sunshine and head out for a walk to Union Station.

Along the way, we ran into a bride and groom who joined our group for a photo!

Ha! So fun. We took more pictures at Union Station,
then headed to Giordanos for some amazing deep dish pizza!

Afterwards, we went to Sunshine Gospel Ministries where we are spending the night tonight. Jared Hamernick, our Sunshine Ministries partner, was there to greet us and get us set for the night. We then had a time of worship and devo time with God. Each student has a devotional booklet they will be working through this week! Some of the students shared with the larger group about what stood out to them from the devo time. Some of what was shared included: "unconditional love comes from God," "Loving anyone different than us is challenging," and " 1 John 3:16-18.

Lights out was then at 10:30pm to get a good night sleep. We have an early start tomorrow with breakfast at 6:45am and then off to Christ Bible Church for their 8am service. We are in for a fantastic day exploring the city of Chicago tomorrow!

Keep praying for us! I'm believing God to do great things this week.
Thanks for the comments and prayers! It means a lot to all of us.

"Working on the sign pairing team has been an incredible experience not only because of the relationships we've built but also because of the lasting impact the signs will have on the community. Sunshine has entrusted us with painting the logos that will cover the outer walls of the shop. It has been, despite many layers of paint covering our bodies and clothes, a really fun time! Most of all, next year when the senior high scones back to Sunshine they will be able to see the signs we painted across the street that will be attracting customers and helping get the people of Woodlawn jobs." Rachel

"Yesterday the whole crew piled into 8 train cars and traveled down town. The plan was to talk with strangers on the L and just shine the light of Christ through conversation. When I sat down I knew God had great things in store I just had to step out of my comfort zone and trust him. So I sat next to this young college looking guy and started to ask him the stereotypical question, "what is your favorite thing about chicago?, how long have you lived here?" and more. Soon the conversation flowed to his college major which is abnormal psych, which he got interested in because his little brother has special needs. I was able to talk and relate to this complete stranger because my cousin also has special needs. We had a great conversation around this. It is amazing what God can do with a person being willing to move out of the comfort zone." Kirsten

Today is our final day! We are working an extra long day so we can finish much and finish well. Tonight we will have our final teaching from Joel and a time of worship and reflection before heading on the bus for the drive home. Please pray for our drivers, Bob, Kelli, Chris, Eric and Dean. Please pray for the kids to finish well and to truly see God's glory on display in the neighborhood, in each other and even in themselves. See you soon!!

Today was morning work and then the 'L' experience. The kids were rock stars as they opened up and took risks to have spiritual conversations.

In the evening Joel taught on the Glory of God and the brokenness of man on display and how each of these is true. He challenged us to see the glory of God in everyone and everywhere, not just the brokenness. A great challenge to take home with us tomorrow.

Thursday: What a beautiful day. It started out with a fantastic hot breakfast, a little rain and some cool weather. Prayers answered.

Then off to work projects. Joel, the executive director from Sunshine, shared how thankful he was for such a large group because we were able to make a really big dent in their projects and get them closer to their goal of opening July 1st.

After a longer work day we all loaded up and went to the beach for a little devo time, ice cream and fun. The water was cold but the sand was warm and there was plenty of space to run or just sit and be with friends.

After a surprise dinner of Harold's chicken we had the pleasure of attending a prayer service at New Beginnings - another church in Woodlawn. They are believing for big impossible things from God and we got to pray with them and they also prayed over us. It was a really really great day.

We spent some time at the end of the night talking a bit about what God has been doing. The students are seeing God's glory everywhere and want to bring this perspective back home with them. Such great insightful kids you have. I am trusting God to continue to press and make them uncomfortable so they will be moved for him.

Some of their words:

"God has given me a new perspective on the homeless through the mealshare. On Tuesday I met Carl sitting on the side of the walk. Our group approached him hesitantly as this was pushing us way outside of our comfort zone. We talk dot Carl for an hour and a half. He was previously addicted to hard drugs but praised God that the had freed him from that horrible habit. I admired Carl's openness to talk about his struggle and and God's glory through all of it Carl also talked about his few near death experiences including a 3 month coma. Carl knows he's here for a reason - to further God's kingdom. PS miss you fan - disappoint you haven't written any embarrassing blog comment :)" Aly H.

"I have been working on the construction and shoveling crew and have been shown God's love and kindness through off the people in the community. They always are so kind and generous to su even when they have so little, which has motivated me even more. The L train and mealshare were really fun and entertaining because we go to see and experience the city as well as the people. It has been a real eye-opening experience that has showed me that I should be more thankful." Hunter

Must sleep. More tomorrow! Thank you thank you for your prayers! We really do feel them!
All is well here in Woodlawn! We hope you are well back home. The kids are loving hearing from you so keep those little comments coming.

A couple of prayer requests first:

It is very hot and humid so continued prayers against heat and exhaustion would be greatly appreciated.

This is the day in the week where people get tired so we will take your prayers for attitude of grace and encouragement all around.

We could always use your prayers for the logistics of feeding, sleeping, and moving 81 people around the city.

We would love your prayers for a productive few work days as we are all very focused on helping Sunshine to open that coffee shop in a few short weeks.

Last night was an amazing night of teaching as God stirred our hearts about injustice and oppression. Joel's teaching on the reasons behind poverty according to the Bible is always challenging and humbling. This group responded so well and it was exciting to hear them discuss ways that God is moving in them to be influencers for Christ by entering in with oppressed people and working to right injustices. Please do ask them about this and let them share what they have learned and how God spoke to them when they get home. You will be amazed and this will help them to apply this stirring at home - which I believe is what God wants us to do.

The work projects are going well. The mural is traced and will be painted today. The chairs are starting to get stained. The children's team is loving life with those kids. The lawn care/gardeners are making a dent in the weeds. The painting team is starting to put color on the walls today I think. Everyone is busy and content.

I have been especially impressed with the positive way kids are responding to the discomfort of the heat, the waiting around and just some of the annoyances of a trip. They are positive and going with the flow and it makes the job of the leaders so much easier!

Rest assured - God is at work and your kids are growing, safe and awesome.

Some testimonies:

"God is present and active on the south side. I see God moving in the hearts of our teams as they begin to see the image of God in the people they meet in Chicago. I have seen God generously teaching a key fruit of the spirit...patience. This group has also exhibited joy in response to minor inconveniences. This has been a huge answer to all of your prayers. Thank you!" Dean (leader)

"I have seen how God is moving when we did the homeless mealshare. The man my group talked to had a tough story, yet he was grateful for what he had and he was very knowledgeable about the Bible. His passion for the gospel was inspiring and it has pushed me to become more excited about what God has done, is doing and will do." Bennet

"I've learned a lot about educational and racial problems in American through Joel's talks. It has really opened my eyes to problems that are occurring in our country and made me realize how much they need to be fixed. Things happen in this neighborhood just because it is this neighborhood that can effect them for their whole life that is not fair." Blake

"Even though I'm only half way done with this trip, my perspectives have changed and I've come to a realization of some things. I've learned that I have to be grateful of the things I have but not prideful because I don't deserve any of it. From the mealshare, my perspective has changed in the way I view the poor or homeless. Just because they are homeless or poor doesn't mean they are lazy or lost all of their money through bad choices. Everyone has their own unique story and God loves each person the same. Even though some people are considered "unlucky" or "lucky" it doesn't matter in the end as long as they praise and glorify God. I'm so excited to see what else is in store for the rest of the trip. To learn more an understands more about this community and God." Amanda B.

First of all - so sorry to the family of Tess! She switched teams at the last minute. She is a painter! She really wanted to paint some walls!

As I type the work crews are finishing their morning work and having lunch. Half of the group is headed downtown to share a lunch with someone from the homeless community while the other half prepares to tour the Pacific Garden Mission homeless shelter.

Our first two days of work have gone well. It is exciting this year as the students are getting to work on many needed projects in and around Sunshine itself. Sunshine hopes to open a coffee shop on the corner across the street from their offices on July 1st. This is one way they hope to create business in the community. Our students get to paint, scrub, build, sand and put their love and sweat into this endeavor side by side with our ministry partners. It is a real blessing and they are embracing the work and the heat like champions!

Yesterday afternoon half of the teams experienced the homeless mealshare and the other half did the shelter tour. Both groups came back with stories of God's faithfulness, his sovereignty and our needed humility. One student shared with me that the entire experience of walking downtown looking for someone to share a meal with helped him to see people through God's eyes in a new way, not just homeless people, but all people. God is moving in their hearts.

Last night Joel taught on the concept of Shalom. We are meant to be at peace in our relationships with God, each other, ourselves and creation. Because the world is broken - we are not. We learned how God gives us glimpses of this shalom - the way things are supposed to be. We get to be a part of bringing more shalom to the world around us.

We also saw God's heart for the city and how many ways God's glory is put on display in the city. We often think of the negative things about a city but there are many beautiful things. Our students came up with a list. Diversity, architecture, close community, sustainability. The city is not better than the country or the suburbs of course but it is wonderful to take time to see past the crowds and the dirt and look at the way God is at work powerfully in the city.

Your students have been doing a great job. Very attentive and engaged in all activities - with each other, with the new people they meet, in learning and in working. Everyone is not always comfortable but everyone is always present and positive. I am proud and thankful!

I asked a few kids something they were surprised about so far. They talked about how friendly the people have been. How different it is to be in the minority. The little children are so open and best friends right away. They also have amazing names that are new to our kids. ;)

Here are the words of some your students:
"I am on the painting team. We are helping paint a new coffee shop, that's going to be a place where people from the community can go and hangout. We started off by peeping the walls for paint. We taped paper to protect the wall from the paint. I am amazed by what we accomplished in just two days. I am seeing how God is using us for his purpose on this trip." Sarah T.

"I am on the painting team and we are helping paint the alls of the new coffee shop called the Green Line Cafe. While we took a break we started collecting trash and some people from the community came outside to pick up trash in their yard too. That is one way we saw God working." Alexis C.

"The homeless mealshare opened my eyes to the way God can work through anyone." Cole

"I am on children's team and I love it! The kids are awesome and I know I'm already going to miss them. God is truly touching these children in Sunshine and I'm thankful to be a part of it." Chris K.

"I am on the children's team and it's awesome. I et to see kids grow in stature with God and each other and I know I'll miss them" Levi

God is beginning to build relationships and stir hearts. All of the kids are doing well and taking care of themselves and each other.

Thank you for your continued prayers. We are praying for fruit in this ministry, in the kids we are working alongside and in the hearts of our kids!

More tomorrow!

We started the day at Christ Bible Church where Pastor Ford preached a powerful challenge to fathers and men but also for all of us to stand up and serve. We all especially enjoyed the worship music and Pastor Ford's passionate and animated style of preaching!

Then it was on to sight seeing day. We visited Millennium Park, had lunch on Navy Pier, took a water taxi through downtown and visiting the Skydeck at the Willis Tower.

Then we headed to the church where we will have our teaching and worship each night. Joel gave an orientation on Sunshine and safety and began what is sure to be an exciting and enlightening dialogue on God's heart for the poor and his heart for us.

We begin our service week tomorrow. The kids were pumped to get settled in tonight and to get moving and serving tomorrow. I will post work team lists so you can know who is where and also pray for each group and each name.

It was a great fun day and now we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get busy!

Thank you thank you for your prayers and love and support. It is the only way this happens.

Blessings...More tomorrow!
This blog will be updated daily, most often before 10am, with prayer requests, updates, pictures and stories of how we are seeing God at work. Please feel free to leave comments and messages of encouragement for the group or for your Chicago Team rep. We will read them each day.

We also pray for you to experience his peace, love and power this week wherever you are!

I am thinking you may not recognize your babies when they get home. They have been changed and it is good! God is good!

Thursday service projects saw answered prayer and new adventures. A few members of the children team volunteered to get up early to go to the school and help set up for an all school fun day. The whole team spent the day face painting, manning booths and playing with the kids that they have spent this week getting to know. It was a Fun Day!

The Living Hope team continued their work projects around the church but they also had the opportunity to walk the community and hand out flyers for the church's VBS that starts next week. It was fun for them to get out, see the neighborhood and interact with the community.

The SGM team continued to dig that hole. They had some positive interactions with the neighbors and they were also questioned by neighbors that wanted to know what they were doing and why they were in the neighborhood. They had prayed to interact with the neighborhood and they got a whole picture. They handled this interaction with grace and love and God was glorified.

The afternoon was spent traveling the El train to see the city, the different communities and segregation as well as to interact with the people of Chicago in the hopes of spiritual conversations. This is a "step out of your comfort zone" situation and it was a joy to watch our kids reach out around them. They had so much fun and had amazing conversations. Even the most shy kid took some risks and had a blast.

My Lia and Will and their helper Elizabeth are doing amazingly well. Thank you for keeping them in your prayers. Lia and Will have LOVED being with your students and it has blessed me much to see your kids love on my kids!

We had some more Chicago style pizza for dinner at Sunshine. Then we headed to the beach for a little quiet time and some fun. They swam - the brave ones - it was freezing! They walked, talked, played worship music and a big game of ultimate. It was a beautiful evening!

We went back to the church and had an amazing night. We spent some time sharing our El train experiences. Mark called from Guatemala and we prayed for them and they us. The family members from both trips got to talk and it was very sweet. We can't wait to be all together again Sunday morning!

Then we spent some time reflecting on all that God has done in and through us this week. We focused on how he is speaking to us. We spent some time in silence and the leaders served the students in a powerful way. We worshipped and responded to God after the leaders prayed over each and every student. The students prayed for each other and it was nothing short of beautiful.

We ended the night with everyone sharing aloud to give God the glory for what he had done in them. After the prayer, Micah yelled "one more song!" and the kids began to chant and so did I. One more song to give glory to him!

A few more testimonies from the students...

This trip has been so fun! I went into this trip very skeptical and wondering what it would be like. But after spending a week here and with these people, I know that I was meant to come on it. Working with the kids, though hard and frustrating at times was definitely rewarding. The biggest things i have seen was that even though there is so much brokenness and poverty, people are still able to have tuna and make the best out of their situation. Dani Marty

Being on this trip has had a huge impact on the way I look at other people. Getting to know the residents of the neighborhood and seeing the love for the people and the passion for helping them that Sunshine has has helped me to understand the love of Jesus in a new way. Micah Winters

This trip has been so amazing! Last night the leaders washed our feet, just like Jesus washed his disciples. It was so cool! It as overwhelming (in a good way) to see so many of us in surrender to the King. I was so filled with joy seeing our encouraging and united community. Praise God! Janelle Cross

So today we have our final day. Hard to believe it's over. They are finishing up projects and saying goodbye. This is especially hard on the Wadsworth Elementary team. They have built some real sweet relationships with those kids and they will truly miss them.

This afternoon we have the opportunity to tour Moody Bible Institute. Then we will pack up and clean. Debrief our time at Sunshine and end the week with a worship concert of hip hop music and dance. We will load the bus and head back to MN, more unified, with more humility and wisdom, with new passions and new friends and I do believe, more like Christ.

Thanks family for your love and prayers. Last night we were reminded of his goodness and how he always shows up and he never ever lets us down. Amen?

Mama Kelli
In the Thursday morning post below you can hear a little bit from each of the service teams.

We met Pastor Jay last night. He is our speaker as we finish out the week. He is an African American pastor who was called back to the south side. The kids loved his style and his heart and the solid biblical foundation from which he shared with us. He had some really good, really memorable words for us. God calls us to be unified. and there is no unity without diversity. He challenged us to look at the first few times the gospel is shared in Acts. 1. the disciples were out in the community. 2. the holy spirit does something. 3. people ask a question. 4. the gospel is always the answer.

Just a few nuggets from Pastor Jay.

Then we spent time as a group sharing the experiences of the day and encouraging each other. It is so fun and encouraging to hear how they are seeing God's glory in each other.

thanks for praying for service teams, the el experience, and our team night tonight.

What an amazing missions trip we are experiencing all together! God has been so good in providing so many cool, unexpected moments as we have travelled and served together! I am blessed to be with the Sunshine work crew, and we are working hard - bucket after bucket and wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of dirt and mud from an old basement. The students have such incredible, positive attitudes as we work hard together, and I am so impressed with their strength and ambition, beyond all of our expectations because of God working through us all! As a leader, I have so loved working with these students and watching them push themselves individually and as a group, seeing them serve others and serve the Lord through this experience! God is truly working in the hearts of all of us, and I am beyond blessed to be here with them, seeing them grow in their faith and pushing themselves beyond their expectations…all because of the Lord (and also because of all your prayers - thank you!) Leader Kari H.

The trip has gotten us all thinking. With each day there is an experience that has the power to transform anyone who is openly willing. I see God working in people who i would never have expected it. Our perspective on the world and people is being flipped as we continue to look for Jesus in others. Lauren

This trip has the ability to transform people into completely open=hearted disciple makers of Jesus. Coming into this trip, I never would have expected that I would have either the willingness or openness to branch out and touch people's lives. Not only am I now open and willing, but I also want to live a life like this, being the salt and light in dark places. Michael

When arriving in Chicago we had a different picture in mind. We were picturing tall buildings, much like the inter city of Chicago. We had no idea the people of the south side has so many struggles, much different than our own. When traveling around Chicago it was cool to see the other cultures. Emily and Claire

I painted a stairwell with my team to help a Muslim family move in to a new apartment. It was cool because they decided to go to a church service to see what Christianity was all about. Emily

I went to Wadsworth. Everyday I help out in classrooms leading 3rd graders. It was interesting to see the different culture connections. I love seeing the kids faces everyday as I enter the room. They taught me to be more open and always seek the positive side.

God is working!! More details soon! and pics!Wooddale Senior High Urban Triphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12005873838639213286noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595743798083493527.post-65795936443309825822013-06-19T07:10:00.003-07:002013-06-19T07:20:48.472-07:00Wednesday morning! We are eating breakfast and everyone is smiling and looks great!

Tuesday was another full day for everyone.

The SGM and Living Hope teams had long work days and accomplished so much.

The SGM team is digging down the basement floor in the new Sunshine building across the street. Check out the wheel barrel pictures. Hard and rewarding work. As hard as they are working and as dirty as they are getting they might be the team that is laughing together the most.

Living Hope worked in a city lot next to the church. Weeds were as high as 6 feet but no more. They enjoyed the hard work in beautiful weather and were able to really see their progress. Another part of the team worked in the stairwell cleaning and painting. This group works with Pastor Brad and at lunch gets blessed to hear all God has done to bring the church to the place it is. They get to see how many people stop by and how many "interruptions" come into his day. He is ministering at all times to people in need and our kids our seeing how God loves his people and is always available.

Wadsworth (the elementary school) had a short work day. The kids were once again all over the school serving in classrooms with Pre-K thru 4th grade and working to organize supplies. This school is one of many schools in low income neighborhoods that will be closing this year so there is much confusion, sadness and also excitement during this last week. Then The Wadsworth team did their homeless mealshare experience. We will share more about that tomorrow as the other groups will do that experience today.

Here are a few words from your students....

Being with the children's team is great and really eye opening seeing all of the poverty in the schools just me more motivation to help. Everything is going great here! Maddie Griggs

I have been working with an amazing 3rd grade class. i quickly learned that the teachers don't yell because they are mean and want to but because they have to. [the kids were a little thrown but the different ways teachers communicate in the school here - much more firm and loud than the schools back home]. Yesterday I tutored kids in math all day. The one on one time with the kids was amazing. The Lord has been working in amazing ways! We have all been blessed by the kids at Wadsworth Elementary! Nathan Schmid

I have been packing up a closet in the main office of the school. We have been putting school and office supplies into boxes and taking inventory. It has been hard work but it is rewarding to help the administration and staff. This work project is teaching me patience and always having a good and positive attitude. I'm so excited to see God's glory and power as the week continues. Christina Solfelt

Over the past few days, I have seen the joy and light of God shine through each of our students as they minister to children at Wadsworth elementary and each other. It has been exciting to walk down the halls of Wadsworth and see our students one on one tutoring second graders in math, or taking the time to sound out every word in a short chapter book with a student who was falling behind with her reading skills. The amazing thing is that God is not only using our high schoolers to spread his love to the students at Wadsworth, they are also showing us the love of Christ. There is nothing quite like the instant acceptance these children are giving to us through their hugs, sharing of stories and laughter. In Matthew 19 we see how dear children are to Jesus and it is great seeing our young students follow in the footsteps of Christ as they invest wholeheartedly in the students of Wadsworth! Leader Kari

After the work projects we had some team time. We went to Hyde Park and had ice cream. Then walked to a park for some quiet time and then hang out time for a bit before dinner and teaching.

We had our last talk with Joel and he spent some extra time just letting our students ask him questions about all we have covered so far. He knows his bible and he knows how to communicate so well. Many students have commented that his teaching times have been some of their favorite parts of the trip so far.
Today, thank you for praying for our second group as they experience the mealshare, for the Wadsworth team as they have a long work day and for continued positive attitudes and God first mind set of our awesome students!
Thank you so much for your prayers. We do feel them.

Our first service day went well. The kids dove right in and got dirty, sweaty and joyful!
The post below this lists the teams everyone is on so you can see where your favorite students are serving this week.

Mondays experience was the tour of Pacific Garden Mission, the largest homeless shelter in the US. The tours are given by men who were once a part of the homeless community, came to PGM, found the Lord and now serve.
A theme of the week is to look for God's glory on display and also the brokenness of man. It is cool to see the kids finding all the amazing ways that God is working at PGM and also things that are harder and more challenging.

Joel, the director of Sunshine, has done the teaching these last two nights. Monday nights talk asked the question "Why are people poor?". Many of our students hadn't given that question much thought so it was eye opening for them to discover together the many different reasons that someone might fall into, or stay in, poverty. Then Joel talked abut the causes of poverty listed in the bible. Tragedy, personal sin and oppression and injustice. And which one does the bible talk about most? Oppression and injustice. This is always a challenging talk as we look at God's heart for the oppressed and what that looks like on the south side of Chicago and where we live. The kids handled this college level talk with patience and wisdom. We did some debriefing and will continue to explore what this means for us and how God calls us to join him in his work for justice.

Today the kids head out to work. Wadsworth will have a short work day as they will do the meal share experience this afternoon. SGM and Living Hope will have long work days and they are excited to complete the tasks that they began yesterday.

Here is what some of your students had to say so far...

I was at Wadsworth Elementary School with Mrs. W's 4th grade class! It was so amazing seeing how the children opened up to us within minutes of walking in the room. I am so excited to see how God continues to work in the children's lives and also mine! (Because he is for sure at work in me). Emma Gulden

Today I got placed in demolition group (SGM). I realized I had so much more strength then I thought I had. It was AMAZING. I felt so alive with God that I'm ready to take on tomorrow with a huge smile! Jessi Erickson

Today we stared our service at Wadsworth Elementary School. We began by touring the school and getting assigned to different classes. It was a very interesting experience considering we were the minorities. The kids here are very different from the ones back home. In this week we want to be a positive influence on them. The kids love having us there and we love serving them. The kids also think we have a Minnesotan accent and that we looked weird. Even those these kids are different that the ones back home they just want to be loved and we hope we can share the light of Jesus with them.
Signing off, Ron Steinhoff and Colten Dover

For our work project, we spent time with Pastor Brad at Living Hope church! We were able to help touch up paint, clean and organize an apartment over the church that they are renting to a Muslim family. The best part was later that evening, we met the family moving in and were able to carry up their mattresses and boxes. They were so appreciative of our help and it was such a blessing to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Leader Kate
